The HVPD CC15/500 High Voltage Coupling Capacitor sensor for the partial discharge (PD) testing and monitoring of HV motors and generators rated up to 15 kV. The new sensor is designed for direct galvanic connection to the outputs/busbars, to allow testing of the stator winding insulation of in-service rotating HV motors and generators. Permanent installation is made inside the machine’s terminal box, with one sensor per phase (as illustrated below). The co-axial BNC signal connections are ‘brought out’ to an external sensor terminal box on the side of the machine or are routed through cable tray containment to a position on nearby equipment or walls. This enables PD measurements to be made at any time during operation, without the need for outage.

This sensor technology is ideal to be used in conjunction with our range of portable and permanent PD monitoring and diagnosis systems, for the asset management of rotating machines. The good low frequency response of the sensor and the direct galvanic connection allows the highest possible sensitivity to PD. The HVPD Multi™ Monitor is designed to provide a Complete Network PD Monitoring System and long-term, safe, continuous 'early warning' of incipient insulation faults, without the need for an outage.

The HVPD CC15/500, 15 kV 500 pF (500 pF) coupling capacitor offers a much wider bandwidth than lower capacitance couplers (such as 80 pF) and are suitable for detecting PD pulses down to frequencies of 1 MHz. This allows for the detection of lower frequency PD signals from sources deep into the machine windings within larger rotating machines.
